Rapid News Brief

A&O Shearman announced a five-year AI commitment on Nov. 5 that it values at $1.1 billion, making practice-group time a central resource for developing new tools and services.

The law firm’s announcement says most of that value will come from practices allocating a minimum 3% of their time to development. The total is therefore not a disclosure of $1.1 billion in cash spending.

Practice leaders assign project teams

The firm’s AI leader, David Wakeling, told Reuters that group leaders will select lawyers for dedicated projects. The arrangement does not require every lawyer to spend 3% of their time building new processes.

Wakeling said the firm had operated that way since July and had 17 active projects. Those are the firm’s descriptions of its program, not independently measured productivity results.

Time, technology and client delivery

Non-Billable’s reporting also distinguished the announced value from cash, noting that the firm had not answered its question about the cash portion by publication. The public announcement does not provide a separate cash total.

The strategy builds on existing work, including ContractMatrix, developed with Microsoft and Harvey. A&O Shearman says lawyers, data scientists and developers are working with clients on deployments across jurisdictions, sometimes using different pricing arrangements. These are descriptions of the firm’s offering, not proof of a particular client’s savings.

The firm says its governance keeps responsibility for advice with a qualified lawyer and uses committees to oversee deployment across its practices, sectors and offices. Its stated success measures include easier access to expertise, smoother processes and cost efficiency; the announcement does not establish that the five-year program has achieved those outcomes.

For professional-services operators, the immediate distinction is between purchasing technology and allocating practice capacity to develop services around it. The commitment places development work inside the operating model. Its headline value alone does not show the cash outlay, revenue contribution or financial return from that work.
