Shopify is opening its agentic commerce infrastructure to all developers, removing an approval step that had limited who could build shopping experiences across its merchant network.

The change, announced as part of Shopify’s Spring ’26 Edition, gives developers self-service access to the Universal Commerce Protocol and Shopify Catalog API. Together, the tools are intended to let AI agents discover products, understand merchant rules and move a shopper through checkout without requiring a separate custom integration for each store.

Shopify co-developed the Universal Commerce Protocol, or UCP, with Google and announced it in January. The protocol describes common commerce actions such as product discovery, cart creation, discount codes, loyalty credentials, subscriptions and purchase confirmation. Shopify says it can work with multiple payment processors and alongside other agent protocols.

A distribution shift for merchants

The immediate promise is broader distribution. Shopify merchants can manage their presence in AI channels from the Shopify admin, with integrations spanning ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, Google’s AI Mode and Gemini, according to the company. Product information, pricing and availability can be structured once and made available across participating surfaces.

For brands, that could reduce the technical burden of entering each new assistant or conversational interface. It also introduces a new version of an old platform question: how much control a merchant retains when product discovery happens somewhere else.

Shopify says merchants remain the seller of record and can control whether purchases happen inside an AI conversation or on their own site. Orders and attribution are returned to the merchant’s admin. Those details will be important because an assistant may influence the entire journey, from the first question to the final product selection.

Product data becomes a competitive asset

Agentic shopping changes what it means for a product to be discoverable. Traditional search optimization depends heavily on pages, links and keywords. An agent needs structured attributes, reliable inventory, clear policies and enough context to distinguish one product from another.

Shopify says its Catalog API organizes billions of products into structured, queryable data. Developers can register an agent profile and use a public endpoint to search that catalog. The protocol can then carry the interaction from selection to checkout.

This raises the value of information that brands often treat as routine catalog maintenance: precise dimensions, materials, compatibility, shipping restrictions, return policies, subscription terms and product relationships. If that information is incomplete, an agent may omit the product or recommend a better-documented competitor.

Open protocols do not remove platform power

UCP has broad support from retailers and technology companies, according to Shopify, and an open protocol can reduce fragmentation. But protocols also create new control points. The company that structures the catalog, records the attribution or mediates checkout can influence how the market develops.

Developers will need to evaluate data access, fees, ranking signals and the rules governing how agents present products. Merchants will need reporting that distinguishes visibility from recommendation, and recommendation from purchase. Regulators may eventually ask whether an agent clearly explains why it chose one offer over another.

Shopify says AI-driven traffic to its stores grew eightfold year over year in the first quarter of 2026, while orders attributed to AI-powered searches increased nearly thirteenfold. Those figures come from a small but rapidly expanding channel, and they do not establish how large agentic commerce will become. They do show why platforms are moving quickly to define its infrastructure.

The web made it possible for every merchant to have a storefront. Agentic commerce may make the storefront less visible while making the underlying product data and transaction rails more important. Shopify is positioning itself to provide both.

For merchants, the immediate work is practical: clean the catalog, document policies precisely and begin treating AI-channel visibility as a measurable part of distribution.
