Panasonic Holdings raised its full-year group operating profit forecast Oct. 30 to 710 billion yen from 590 billion yen after its energy unit posted sharply higher quarterly profit, supported by electric-vehicle batteries and data-center energy storage.
The revised forecast covers the fiscal year ending March 2027. It is a management projection, not profit already earned.
Battery earnings rebound
The energy unit’s second-quarter operating profit reached 55.6 billion yen, compared with 1.2 billion yen a year earlier. Panasonic lifted the unit’s full-year operating profit forecast to 198 billion yen from 171 billion yen, a roughly 16% increase also reported by Reuters.
The company’s presentation attributed the quarterly improvement to stronger North American vehicle-battery sales and higher sales of energy-storage systems for data centers. It also identified increased U.S. manufacturing tax credits as a positive factor and higher fixed costs at its Kansas factory as a negative one.
Keep the reporting periods separate
Panasonic’s consolidated release covers six months ended Sept. 30, while the energy figures above describe the second quarter alone. Mixing those periods would overstate the comparison.
For manufacturers and infrastructure buyers, the results show exposure to two demand sources: vehicle batteries and data-center storage. They do not establish that every battery market is expanding at the same pace. The tax-credit and factory-cost disclosures also show why the earnings increase should not be attributed to sales growth alone.
