David Jones, the Australian department-store group, entered voluntary administration on Nov. 5, alongside an appointment of receivers and managers, according to McGrathNicol’s public notice. Its operating review also puts its shopping-center footprint in focus.
Rapid News Brief
Two appointment teams are listed
The McGrathNicol notice lists Matthew Hutton, Jason Preston, Shaun Fraser and Jacinta Nielsen as voluntary administrators. It separately identifies Joanne Dunn, David McGrath and Christopher Hill of FTI Consulting as receivers and managers.
The notice confirms the appointment date and teams for David Jones Group. It does not announce a completed sale or a permanent store-closure schedule.
Trading plans are separate from final outcomes
ABC reported, citing a McGrathNicol statement, that the retailer’s physical and online stores would continue trading under the receivers while they reviewed operations. That is an attributed operating plan, not confirmation that every store will remain in the eventual network.
Chief executive Erica Berchtold said in a statement reported by ABC that the business would work with the administrators, receivers and its secured lender on a reset. The appointments do not, by themselves, establish what that future store network will be.
Westfield exposure provides scale
In an operating update issued before the appointments, Scentre Group said David Jones occupied space at 17 Westfield destinations, covering about 200,000 square meters. It listed calendar-year 2026 gross rent of A$45 million for Scentre’s share, about 1.8% of the group’s gross rent.
Scentre also said rent had been paid through Sept. 30, a dated statement that does not establish the position on the appointment date.
Those figures describe the landlord’s exposure before the appointments. They are not a statement that A$45 million is overdue, nor a list of leases that will end.
The business consequence extends beyond one retailer: a review of a department-store footprint also matters to shopping-center owners and the brands selling through those stores. For now, the confirmed change is the appointment of external teams; individual property, supplier and staffing outcomes should not be treated as settled.
