OpenAI has acquired NextSlide, an artificial-intelligence presentation startup whose team is now working on ChatGPT, the companies disclosed this week. The deal brings OpenAI technology designed to turn prompts, notes, documents and research into polished, editable slide presentations.

NextSlide announced on its website that it had joined OpenAI. Co-founder Ahmed Beshry said separately that the announcement came “a few months late,” indicating the transaction closed earlier in 2026. Financial terms were not disclosed, and neither company provided a detailed product road map.

From generated text to finished business work

NextSlide was built around a familiar workplace problem: producing a presentation requires more than writing an outline. A useful deck needs hierarchy, pacing, visual consistency and elements that remain editable after generation. The startup positioned its product as a way to transform source material into a structured presentation rather than a static image of slides.

That capability fits a broader shift in workplace AI. The first generation of assistants largely returned answers in chat boxes. The next generation is competing to create complete artifacts—spreadsheets, documents, presentations and other files that teams can revise, share and use in established workflows.

For OpenAI, presentation creation is a particularly strategic category. Slides sit at the intersection of analysis, storytelling and design, and they are used across sales, strategy, marketing, finance and executive communication. A reliable presentation workflow can connect research and drafting with a deliverable that carries a decision into a meeting.

What NextSlide adds to ChatGPT

The acquisition is best understood as a combination of talent and product expertise. NextSlide’s team has worked on the mechanics of organizing information across slides, maintaining design coherence and producing output that users can continue editing. OpenAI said only that the team is working on ChatGPT, so any specific integration, release date or feature set would be speculation.

The distinction between generated and editable work is important. Business users rarely accept a first draft without revision. They need to correct facts, apply brand standards, adjust layouts and collaborate with colleagues. AI that produces an attractive but inflexible result saves less time than a system that preserves control after generation.

NextSlide also gives OpenAI experience in balancing automation with presentation judgment. A model must decide what belongs on a slide, what should remain in speaker notes, when a chart is appropriate and how much information an audience can absorb at once. Those decisions are partly technical and partly editorial.

The competitive stakes for workplace software

Presentation tools have become a visible battleground for generative AI because the format exposes both the strengths and limits of models. Text generation alone is insufficient; the system must coordinate narrative, data, visual design and export quality. Incumbent productivity suites have distribution advantages, while AI-native startups can redesign the workflow from the prompt outward.

For marketers and executives, deeper presentation support inside ChatGPT could compress the distance between a research question and a boardroom-ready narrative. It also raises governance questions. Organizations will need controls for confidential inputs, source verification, brand templates and the provenance of claims placed on slides.

Beshry previously co-founded Caper AI, which Instacart acquired in 2021. That history gives the team experience building AI products intended for operational use rather than demonstration alone.

The acquisition does not yet establish what ChatGPT will ship. It does show where OpenAI sees value: not only in answering questions, but in helping people produce the work products through which companies communicate and make decisions.
