Apple announced on Nov. 2 that dating features and virtual companions engaging users in sexual or romantic content will receive a minimum App Store age rating of 18+, creating a new product-distribution requirement for affected developers.

This Rapid News Brief covers Apple’s announced platform requirements, not a finding that any particular app violates them.

Two dates govern the questionnaire change

According to Apple’s developer notice, new content declarations arrive in App Store Connect on Nov. 16. Developers must answer them when submitting an update or changing the age-rating questionnaire. All apps must complete the declarations by Jan. 12, 2027.

One declaration covers dating or relationship connections between people, or a virtual companion that engages a user in sexual or romantic content. The other covers sharing a person’s real-world location with another person or group.

The companion provision is defined by those interactions, not simply by whether an app uses AI. Apple’s notice does not say every AI assistant receives an adult rating. It also says shared-location features may leave the minimum rating unchanged in some regions.

Ratings and age confirmation are separate

Apple’s existing rating documentation explains that developers supply information about content, capabilities and controls through a questionnaire. Apple converts those responses into global and, where applicable, regional ratings. Ratings help users evaluate content and support parental controls; they are a required property of an App Store listing.

That documentation also distinguishes the system’s calculated rating from a developer’s option to choose a higher one. Region-specific ratings can differ, so a single headline label does not describe every storefront.

Separately, Apple announced in February that the App Store would require adult confirmation before allowing downloads of 18+ apps in Australia, Brazil and Singapore. That earlier measure supplies distribution context for the new descriptors; it is not a newly announced worldwide identity-check requirement.

For product teams, the immediate operational issue is matching questionnaire answers to the features their apps actually provide, while tracking the November start date and January completion deadline separately.
