BP reported Oct. 30, 2026, that third-quarter underlying replacement-cost profit reached $8.46 billion, compared with $2.21 billion a year earlier, as higher refining margins and gas trading earnings helped fund a sharp reduction in net debt.

Rapid News Brief — The company’s regulatory release separates that underlying, non-IFRS measure from reported profit attributable to BP shareholders, which was $4.70 billion. The two figures should not be described as the same earnings result.

Refining supports a larger underlying result

Reuters reported that underlying replacement-cost profit exceeded the $7.33 billion expected in a company-provided poll of analysts. The comparable second-quarter result was $5.73 billion.

BP’s refining indicator margin rose to $46.70 per barrel from $29.60 in the second quarter and $15.80 a year earlier. That indicator describes the refining market environment, rather than profit earned on every barrel processed by the company.

Customers & Products generated $6.95 billion in underlying replacement-cost profit before interest and tax, compared with $4.95 billion in the previous quarter. BP attributed the refining improvement to higher realized margins, stronger commercial optimization and less turnaround and maintenance activity, among other factors.

Cash generation reduces debt

Operating cash flow reached $14.83 billion, compared with $10.86 billion in the second quarter. Net debt fell to $13.87 billion from $22.25 billion over the same period. Reuters reported that this brought BP to its net-debt target a year ahead of schedule.

The underlying profit increase did not mean that refinery volumes rose. BP reported throughput of about 1.40 million barrels a day, down from 1.47 million in the previous quarter, reflecting the divestment of its Gelsenkirchen refinery. Refining availability nevertheless improved to 96.5% from 94.7%.

Chief Executive Meg O’Neill said the company remained focused on reducing debt to protect its current dividend in a lower-price environment, according to Reuters. BP has scheduled a strategy and outlook update for Dec. 15. That is a future presentation, not an announced set of new operating targets.
