SurveyMonkey said on Monday, Sept. 14, that an internal accessibility audit expanded into a companywide visual-identity and design-system overhaul, showing how a compliance-oriented review can become a broader product and brand transformation.
The project, called Catalyst, began with color contrast and ultimately touched the survey platform’s interface, marketing, typography, motion, illustration and reusable components. SurveyMonkey’s account of the work provides a useful case study for design leaders because it connects three functions that companies often manage separately: accessibility, brand expression and product delivery.
The facts are specific to SurveyMonkey. The broader lesson is an interpretation: accessibility can reveal structural weaknesses in a brand system long before a conventional rebrand brief does.
A contrast audit exposed a systems problem
SurveyMonkey said the process started when some color combinations failed its accessibility goals. That is a narrow test, but color cannot be fixed in isolation when the same palette must work across interface states, marketing pages, illustrations, presentations and campaigns.
The World Wide Web Consortium’s guidance for WCAG 2.2 explains why contrast is functional: low contrast can prevent people with moderately low visual acuity from reading text. The standard defines measurable thresholds rather than a subjective preference for what looks clear.
Once a team changes a core color token, every component using that token becomes part of the design problem. SurveyMonkey’s response was to bring brand and product designers into one process instead of allowing each group to produce a separate answer. The company describes the result as a single source of truth for color, type, motion and component behavior.
That is the difference between a palette correction and brand infrastructure. A correction fixes a known failure. Infrastructure makes the fix repeatable across new work, regional teams and outside agencies.
The identity had to work inside the product
SurveyMonkey introduced its broader “Today’s SurveyMonkey” platform update on Sept. 1. In the launch announcement, the company positioned the warmer visual identity and new illustrations as part of an accessibility-focused experience designed to help people navigate and build with confidence.
That framing matters because software brands are often redesigned first in campaign assets, where a creative team controls the canvas. Product interfaces are less forgiving. A color must communicate focus, status and hierarchy. Typography must survive dense workflows. Motion has to guide rather than distract. Components must remain usable at different sizes and in unpredictable combinations.
SurveyMonkey also markets accessibility as a product capability for survey creators and respondents. That raises the standard for its own system: the brand promise and the operating interface have to agree.
AI accelerated execution, not design authority
SurveyMonkey’s design team said it used generative AI to explore variations, scale patterns and apply repeatable edits, while keeping decisions about type, color, motion, tone and overall direction with human designers.
That division of labor is more useful than a generic debate over whether AI belongs in creative work. It identifies which tasks require judgment and which benefit from automation. A design system makes the boundary more enforceable because approved tokens and components can constrain what AI-assisted production generates.
The risk is that speed multiplies inconsistency when the underlying rules are vague. If an organization cannot define which color relationships are accessible, which components are canonical and how the brand should behave in motion, an AI tool will produce variations faster without resolving the ambiguity.
In that sense, AI did not reduce the need for a design system. It made the system more important.
Design leaders should measure adoption, not launch
SurveyMonkey said teams can adopt the identity incrementally by inserting new tokens and typography into existing component structures. That reduces the operational shock of a full replacement, but it creates a measurement challenge.
Leaders should track more than the number of redesigned pages. Useful measures include contrast compliance, component reuse, exceptions created outside the system, time required to ship new assets and the share of customer journeys using the updated patterns. User testing should determine whether the interface is actually easier to navigate, not merely more consistent.
The company’s case is still self-reported, and the long-term effect on accessibility, usability and brand recognition has not been independently measured. That limitation should remain visible.
Even so, the process offers a durable operating model: start with a real user barrier, trace it through the system, align brand and product decisions, then use automation only where the rules are clear. The visual refresh is the visible output. The more consequential design work is the infrastructure underneath it.
