Volkswagen reported a third-quarter operating loss of 5.86 billion euros on Oct. 29, 2026, as large impairment charges and pressure on vehicle profitability intensified its cost-cutting challenge.

Quarterly revenue fell 6.3% to 75.28 billion euros from 80.31 billion euros a year earlier, according to the company’s results statement. The after-tax loss was 5.82 billion euros, a separate measure from the operating loss.

Reuters reported that Visible Alpha analysts had expected an operating loss of 2.6 billion euros. The year-earlier operating loss was 1.30 billion euros.

Charges obscure a weaker underlying margin

Volkswagen recorded 8.7 billion euros in special items over the first nine months, including 6.4 billion euros of noncash Porsche goodwill impairment. Of the total special items, 7.8 billion euros arose in the third quarter.

Nine-month operating profit was 71 million euros. Before special items, the company reported 8.8 billion euros and a 3.8% operating margin. Those adjusted figures do not replace the reported result.

CFO and COO Arno Antlitz said lower profitability on electric vehicles than combustion-engine models was adding to earnings pressure. Volkswagen also cited conditions in China, pricing competition and tariffs.

For suppliers and operating executives, the distinction is important: removing noncash charges changes the earnings presentation, but does not itself improve vehicle economics or eliminate the need to reduce costs.
