Pony.ai unveiled a Level 4 battery-electric heavy-duty truck with GAC Commercial Vehicle in Hannover, Germany, on Monday, Sept. 14, and said volume production is scheduled to begin later in 2026.
The Gen-4 Robotruck debuted at IAA Transportation 2026 as Pony.ai looks beyond its Chinese freight operations. Reuters reported that the autonomous-driving company is discussing European road tests with governments and prospective customers. No testing approvals, orders or European deployment dates were announced.
A factory-integrated autonomous truck
The vehicle combines Pony.ai’s fourth-generation autonomous-driving system with GAC Commercial Vehicle’s T9 electric-truck platform and a redundant drive-by-wire chassis. Pony.ai said the truck is intended for long-haul freight, dedicated logistics routes and port operations.
GAC said the sensor package includes nine lidar units, three radar units and 13 cameras. Those specifications describe the production design, but they do not establish that the vehicle has completed European regulatory review or proved its economics in commercial service.
The truck’s debut coincides with IAA Transportation’s Sept. 15–20 program, which centers on electrification, autonomous driving, artificial intelligence and software-defined vehicles.
Why the production plan matters
Autonomous-freight programs often remain limited pilots or retrofits. Pony.ai and GAC are presenting this truck as an integrated vehicle headed for serial production, a step that could make manufacturing consistency, service support and fleet procurement as important as the driving software itself.
That production approach could also reduce the integration work required of fleet buyers, although neither company disclosed pricing, order volume or cost-per-mile projections for the new model. Those missing figures will determine whether technical integration becomes a practical purchasing advantage.
For logistics operators, the next evidence will be operational: where road tests are permitted, which routes can be served, how the vehicles are supervised and whether utilization and safety performance support the investment. The 2026 production target makes Pony.ai’s European discussions commercially relevant, but regulatory access and customer commitments remain the gates between a trade-show debut and a working freight network.
