ExxonMobil reported on Oct. 30, 2026, that its Energy Products business earned more than its oil-and-gas production segment in the third quarter, highlighting the growing contribution of refining to the company’s financial performance and its plans to increase fuel supply.

Rapid News Brief — Total reported earnings were $15.4 billion, or $3.72 a share. Separately adjusted earnings were $17.5 billion, or $4.23 a share. The adjusted figure is an alternative performance measure, not additional profit.

Refining changes the earnings mix

The company’s results release listed Energy Products earnings of $7.169 billion, compared with $7.088 billion for Upstream. In the preceding quarter, those figures were $5.465 billion and $7.927 billion, respectively.

ExxonMobil said its U.S. Gulf Coast refineries operated their crude units at 100% utilization during the quarter. The company attributed the sequential improvement in Energy Products to higher margins and operating performance, partly offset by external effects on global capacity utilization.

Reuters reported that refining had overtaken exploration and drilling as a source of ExxonMobil’s earnings for the first time in at least six years.

Supply investment and balance-sheet priorities

Chief Financial Officer Neil Hansen told Reuters that the company was investing in refineries, including its Baytown complex in Texas, and using trading operations to direct supplies globally. ExxonMobil said those investments would add another 100,000 barrels a day of U.S. distillate production, but did not give a timetable, Reuters reported.

That is a future supply objective, not an addition already available to customers. It does not establish when a particular buyer will receive more fuel or what that buyer will pay.

Hansen also told Reuters that ExxonMobil reduced debt by $8 billion during the quarter. The company’s release reported $25.7 billion in operating cash flow and $19.1 billion in separately defined free cash flow.

ExxonMobil announced plans for $20 billion in share repurchases in 2027, conditional on reasonable market conditions. Those planned purchases should remain separate from cash already returned during the reported quarter.
