GE Vernova announced Oct. 28 that it agreed to acquire high-voltage equipment supplier Trench Group from Triton Partners for the equivalent of $9 billion, expanding its planned control over components used in electricity grids.

The acquisition has not closed. GE Vernova expects completion in late 2027, subject to regulatory approvals and consultations with employee representatives where required. It currently expects to fund the purchase equally with cash and debt.

Bringing a supplier inside the business

Trench is already a GE Vernova supplier. Its products include bushings, instrument transformers and coils. GE Vernova said the combination would support its Grid Systems Integration and Power Transmission businesses.

The buyer also pointed to a newly opened Trench facility in Charlotte, North Carolina, where production of 765-kilovolt equipment is expected to begin in late 2027. That manufacturing start remains a company expectation, not an operating capability already delivered.

Triton separately confirmed the signed sale agreement. The investment firm said Trench had doubled annual revenue to more than 1 billion euros since becoming independent in April 2024.

Ownership and capacity have different timelines

The proposed transaction links grid-equipment manufacturing with GE Vernova’s broader Electrification portfolio. For utilities and other customers, the immediate development is an agreement about future ownership; closing and the planned North Carolina production start are later milestones.

A larger combined supplier could offer a broader range of equipment, but the announcement does not establish delivery dates for an individual customer’s project. Procurement and construction schedules still require specific commercial commitments rather than assumptions based on the acquisition price.
