Walmart announced Agent Profiles and an Agent Gateway on Oct. 21, 2026, outlining a way for outside AI shopping assistants to transact with Walmart and Sam’s Club while customers retain purchase controls. The initiative gives commerce teams a clearer view of how a major retailer intends to distinguish delegated buying from a shopper’s own activity.
This Rapid News Brief covers announced capabilities, not a generally available service. Retail Dive reported Oct. 22 that the move extends Walmart’s work with external AI systems alongside its own shopping assistant.
Profiles separate delegated purchases
Walmart says Agent Profiles will launch within a month of its announcement. Customers would authorize individual agents inside their accounts and review those purchases separately. They could require approval for each order or permit spending within a chosen limit, and remove an agent’s access.
The company says purchase approval is the default. It may require additional approval even when an order falls within an authorized spending limit. Agents would not receive payment-card details or be able to change payment methods, according to Walmart’s announcement.
A limited connection for developers
The Gateway’s public access page describes an invitation-only early beta whose features can change and may not be available to every participant. That qualification matters for technology partners assessing implementation schedules: the announcement should not be treated as unrestricted access to a finished product.
The page describes a connection through Walmart’s Sparky assistant, with product and fulfillment information supplied directly rather than collected by scraping website pages. It also lists category restrictions, rate limits and compliance controls for connected agents.
For retailers and brands, the practical distinction is between helping customers discover products and allowing software to place orders. Walmart’s proposed profiles make permissions and transaction visibility explicit parts of that handoff. Whether the approach improves conversion or reduces failed orders remains unestablished by the announcement; the published materials do not provide measured commercial results for the new system.
