Etsy updated its seller guidance Oct. 22 to restrict AI-generated functional guides and fully bot-generated listings while tightening product-photo requirements. The changes affect how merchants document what they sell and distinguish their own work from automated output.

This Rapid News Brief reports Etsy’s marketplace policies, not a blanket ban on AI-assisted selling.

Human work and real results matter

In its Seller Handbook announcement, Etsy says functional guides such as patterns, recipes and instructions must contain the seller’s own work rather than AI-generated information. Listings for those guides must show a real result produced using the instructions, not a simulated result.

The company also says listings generated entirely by bots without human involvement are prohibited. AI-generated art remains allowed when sellers have a clear creative role and disclose their use of AI. The distinction concerns authorship and representation, rather than treating every use of AI as the same activity.

The photo rule includes product-specific exceptions

Etsy’s Listing Image Requirements generally require at least one unedited photograph of the actual item against a real background. Other images may use editing tools if they still represent the product accurately.

The policy separately addresses print-on-demand goods, digital downloads and customized or made-to-order items. For example, an authorized stock-photo mockup may show an original design printed by a production partner. Nonvisual digital items may use representative imagery that does not mislead buyers. Sellers therefore face different requirements depending on what a listing actually offers.

Reporting tools are not immediate enforcement

Etsy says a new option for reporting potentially misleading AI imagery will initially help it understand concerns and will not trigger immediate enforcement. Retail Dive’s Oct. 23 coverage also reports the updated listing rules and new guidance when sellers upload images.

For marketplace operators, the business issue is whether buyers can understand what they will receive and the seller’s contribution. A reporting feature, a product-specific photo rule and a prohibition on automated listings are separate controls, with different roles in that trust system.
